On .org there's a bit of a grace period where you can choose to fill in a captcha to immediately get more credits for comments, or you can choose to skip filling in the captcha until you absolutely have to. It's a way for the system to say "heads up, you need to fill in a captcha soon, wanna get it out of the way right now?".

I think the original idea was to reduce the chance of people posting a reply and then close the tab without noticing that they needed to fill in a captcha (since most people are used to entering the captcha at the same time they make their post, not afterwards). It makes for a little higher chance of having a credit buffer.

Another reasoning for the "grace period" is that it saves a bit of time; as it is now you can enter the next captcha while the server is working so when you have finished the post might already be displayed. Otherwise you'd have to first fill in the captcha and only then the system can start processing the post, increasing the delay between submit and display.

I've just never had that happen before, if I fail it has always just asked me for the captcha again.
I have used it several times, if I've changed my mind and didn't want to comment anyway, I would simply not fill in the captcha and just return later, the comment wasn't posted.

Anyways, I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Tried disabling Adblock Addons?
It seems now that common Adblockers (uBlock), etc. block swfchan assets, like the captcha image.
Had to disable the Addon completely.
Swfchan also rests now on the EasyList (adblock black list).

Damn, didn't realize they have started blocking the domains of the actual site itself. That's overkill, I don't serve any ads directly so just blocking the domains of the ad providers should be enough. Maybe someone added the swfchan domains just out of spite for flash, feelsbadman.jpg

Announcement

I can't fix this problem on my own, making a wall of text today that will stay up on .com/.net until the matter is either resolved or it's simply time to give up, whenever that is. Here's a copy of the announcement:

If the site isn't working like it should for you it is because EasyList (a set of filter rules used by your adblocker) has started to block the whole eye.swfchan.com subdomain. This causes captchas to not load and the easy solution is to just disable the adblocker completely. Ironically this causes people using the EasyList ruleset to actually see more ads...

Since it's exceptionally easy to only block the actual ads on swfchan (no ads are actually served from swfchan's own domain) and because the current ruleset is actually causing visitors to see more ads I thought this matter would be quickly resolved. However, I have been trying to contact EasyList for over three weeks now with no response. Therefore I feel the need to ask my visitors to e-mail them as well to bring attention to this issue and show that regular users of EasyList care about swfchan, not just the guy running the site.

They have two e-mails: easylist.subscription@gmail.com and easylist.blog@gmail.com. The first one is the primary mail but I've sent mail to both and received a reply from neither. Have sent using different mail accounts as well so I know there was no sending issues on my end. I should have written this announcement earlier but this whole thing felt like such an open-and-shut case that I would never have imagined swfchan still being blocked like this after three weeks. Big thanks to anyone helping out!

Note: I'm not writing this because of money, the site's income is actually the same as before (less visitors but less blockers equal same ad views). I am however worried that in the long run, in a year or so, this may lead to less links leading to swfchan which would sure enough finally kill it off the web, especially with the dwindling flash support these days. I also don't think this is a fair practice by EasyList, there's no reason what-so-ever to block swfchan itself. I don't serve ads and an adblocker should block ad providers, not sites that use ad providers. I also don't limit anyone blocking ads from using the site in any way. It feels like the EasyList authors took just a minute to look at swfchan, said "fuck it" and proceeded to block the whole thing instead of only the ads.

So if you have a moment I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to e-mail them about this. Just be polite and ask EasyList to block only the ads on swfchan, not the actual content on swfchan itself. There's a discussion thread over [here].

Yo, you may remember last year I made a thread about the possibility of archiving your website in case shit happened (http://swfchan.org/8774/)

From the looks of your announcement, shit could actually happen. I don't know much about your current ad situation, I hope the site is still solvent. I don't need to remind anywhere here you are holding some of the purest interent history there is.

Just remember that if the push comes to shove you've got a way to ensure the whole thing can last at least survive the site itself. Contact Antonizoon at rizon #bibanon to explain the situation (and tell him ThrustVect sent you). Antonizoon could probably help with running the site if asked, though I haven't spoken to him in months due to rl reasons.

I'm afraid I can't offer any real advise on the EasyList problem. Whistleblower lists tend to overkill from time to time, and to make matters worse it seems they have a monopoly in adblocking.

Is that possible? Now that you mention it I had this problem with some ad spam sites where clicking anything ended up with random popups appearing, but I though this was just a new way to force ads on your face. Not to mention that even ublock seems to fail at stopping their ads.

Yo! I remember and do keep it in mind. I still intend to make some kind of archivable version of the site if its time to take it offline, in the meanwhile I hope the wayback machine keeps crawling the site in case I get hit by a bus tomorrow. The site's mostly static pages linking to each other after all.

Do you know if there's a way to help the wayback machine to store missing pieces of the site?

Also on the matter of popads, they use obfuscated ad code that to my understanding change URLs to prevent adblockers from simply blocking the request. However I don't put their code directly into my pages, I load a "middlescript" on my site that contains their script, which then proceeds to pop. That way I can make sure they don't pop more than once per subdomain and it could still be blocked by adblockers (because even though their code is obfuscated you would just need to block the loading of my "middlescript"). It's also how I can provide the little cogwheel icon with ad settings at the bottom of all pages despite the site consisting out of static pages.
>>Anonymous  19jul2017(we)00:09  No.51449  I  P21R14
The reason your site is blacklisted is because you have bullshit popup adds that dodge filters that play sound, or spawn windows saying YOU NEED TO CALL MICROSOFT TECHNICAL SUPPORT

I'm sorry for the bad ads, they are all I can get on this site. The ads can however be blocked very easily, there's no need to block usage of swfchan itself. The site does not have anything implemented that tries to outsmart filters.

Imagine if one day EasyList starts blocking Slashdot, Google Images, 4chan and the homepage of your favorite sports team all because they ran an ad somewhere. Since you still want to access those sites you then need to disable the adblocker and get to watch the ads. An adblocker that doesn't block ads but block entire sites because they run ads is an adblocker that isn't good at its job.

This is probably why EasyList decided to try and kill your site. Even with my ultra-aggressive custom filters and noscript these advertisers to this day manage to create multiple popups every single click on every single element on all pages. Domain blocking doesn't work either by them using randomized domains with anonymized whois details that change periodically.

These kinds of ads are extremely shady and heavily frowned upon. Shady enough that I started blocking the destination sites as well. I want no business from people that pay for these kinds of shit ads. I managed to get things mostly under control (still get the popups but they are auto-killed the moment they spawn). Things got pretty dam close to writing a custom browser plugin that would annihilate any registered click handler.

Basically, you reap what you sow. I'm not affiliated with EasyList but if I were you I would start finding some proper advertisers with a bit more classy ads. I'm not that bothered by having half the page plastered with static images but unstoppable popups that rearrange your tabs simply using the site? NO.

But all you have to do is block the middlescript, if the obfuscated ad code is never even loaded into the site it's impossible that it becomes a problem. I don't even change the filename of the middlescripts, they are static. If EasyList really can't find it I'm willing to help them, I just expect the people running that list to be experts in these sort of things.

I removed the obfuscation completely for over two weeks btw but then reinstated it again when they didn't answer me because what's the point to remove it if you have to disable your adblocker to use swfchan anyway. If they would simply block the middlescript it wouldn't matter if it's obfuscated or not.

Also again about the ads, I've tried dude. Last time was in April this year but I got fooled again and this time by a pretty reputable provider. It's just impossible to find better ad providers for swfchan. There's more on that in the ad thread: http://swfchan.org/488/#48093

Jesus fucking christ, this whole situation makes me just weep inside.

Please tell me people aren't really this unreasonable and also paranoid.
I mean, if the Ad provider is the problem, why not kill THEM off.
It does nothing to block swfchan; Ants even stated that it ends with more people STARTING to get these ads.
It kills of finances of this site anyway, but that's not enough?
Make it so that people who are willing to put up with shitty ads, because providers suck, also have to fiddle around with their blockers?

Does really not a single person involved understand that swfchan is not in a single matter the problem of any of this?

I can't think of a more integer admin dealing with all that stuff in a more honest way, and Ants still gets only shit for no reason?
He even helps people kill off his server cost recovery by scripting it in a way to support that, because he thinks it's their right to, and then flocks just come in telling him to DURR GET BETTER PROVIDER, who don't exist, because OMG PORN NOEZ.

If that is the end of this site, I might as well lose all hope for humanity's future...

I'm no fan of ads (in general), I blocked them ever since I joined the (now defunct) patreon. It worked every time (using Ublock O, sometimes popups would get through, but not loaded),
But I'd disable any list if it means I fucking CAN'T USE THE SITE ANYMORE AT ALL.
Fuck the ads, I'll click them every time, and I'll click them good. It helps Ants and I want to use the freaking site furthermore.

I really didn't want to create an account on their site for just this matter, but consider getting them another salty (but polite) email from this fella here.

That's a dick thing to post since it reduces the number of people that have to turn off their adblocker completely (because they don't know how to make a simple custom filter) ==> meaning it also reduces the chance of people actually e-mailing EasyList about their unjustified filter. So great job helping out to kill Swfchan!

Your browser could have a built-in adblocker if you're sure someone hasn't installed a low-key blocker for you sometime when you weren't looking. Or it's possible that pages are being modified in your router or proxy/VPN to remove stuff.

If you can browse the eye subdomain just fine but not see captchas it's strange since they are on the same subdomain. But if problems suddenly started three weeks ago it almost certainly has to with EasyList's filters, I haven't touched anything related to the captchas this year.

It's not that some of us wouldn't be obviously capable of adding a filter (I'm not doing it just out of spite for EasyList, which I held in high regards prior to this).
Just that most visitors probably won't bother. Mostly ones that just follow a link for a quick porn swf and don't know what's wrong in the first place.
I would imagine adding a filter to a browser addon might just be over the head of most internet users these days, and that's enough to damage the site. For no reason.

(I'm the author of 51718)

After some more poking around I found out that your popup script (inline script) requires cookies to work properly, or will result in repeated popups ("chegetted" is always false). Adblock (plus) cannot block inline scripts so I guess that's why they blacklisted eye.swfchan.com.

Aside from sitty ad farms screwing you over, have you tried patreon? Seems to be all the rage recently so it's probably worth trying. I've seen some pretty reasonable numbers for running a server or two ($500-$2000 a month) shown on various patreon pages. My jew of a boss made me run his entire business (40 odd domains) on $30 a month, surely so can you?

In any case, trying to fight ad blockers isn't going to help you. I mean, Google recently announced that they intent to add a built-in ad blocker to Chrome.

Didn't Chrome used to have adblock in their first version? But then they removed it because they realized it was killing off the only way to make money online for most sites. Now they add it back in? Since ads are Google's life blood I'm going to predict right here that they will allow "safe ads" this time, maybe with no option of disabling that feature, and Google's ads are of course always safe. Adding built-in adblocking is a good way for Google to make sure their own ads are never ever blocked; who's going to bother installing another such plugin when its operation is supposed to be there already?

Anyway I thought they just had to block the pages with cheget in them to block the popups on swfchan, so I guess the problem is a pop is still created even for a blocked URL? The cookie thing should be a non-issue because that's how it works almost everywhere, ads remember who they have shown to via cookies most of the time. I could make a system that saves info about which IPs have loaded what ads on the server but it's so much more convenient for the browsers to take care of that themselves, especially since the site uses static pages (saves resources for both visitor and server).

One easy way to block the inline completely would be to just make sure the chegetted variable is always true by default. Another way would be to make the "I have popped"-cookies always be there. I'm willing to work with them to solve this, I just want them to talk with me. Not being allowed to communicate about a problem is very frustrating, it's Patreon all over again. It's not that I'm trying to fight adblockers, I merely don't think an ad-blocker should be a content-blocker.

I intend to set up a new crowdfunding account someday, been meaning to do it during the summer actually but I don't really know which way to go since I'm picky about being Anonymous. If I by some miracle could make 500 bucks that way I'd be able to cut down on ads a whole lot. I'm thinking .org and .net would be completely ad-free and .com would only have the banners plus 1 pop instead of 3.

>>52163
Problem is I don't actually have any open-source stuff. I am leaning towards those two sites though, I've read somewhere that Gratipay isn't as strict about a project needing to be open-source as their terms leads you to believe. If it's true or not I don't know.

Chrome's browser got shittier the more popular it became. And it also consistently consumed more and more RAM, at least that was my experience until I changed browsers.

Google is attempting to use it's popularity to change Internet standards, such as removing the plugin framework although they already had a completely different framework than other browsers. Firefox is attempting to follow suit in order to gain more users. I don't even use their search engine anymore, just the captcha.

Hrm, I read the thread... I'm surprised that Patreon closed the account. Not sure whether that guy's complaint had anything to do with it. As for the NSFW stuff, Patreon's filled with content creators that produce outright porn for years. I suppose what you could always do is sell merchandise. You know, shirts and stuff with logos or whatever. I have no idea whether it would help but it's better than nothing I suppose.

>> 52168
No idea, I don't follow Chrome's history. I just remembered hearing about them wanting to add a blocker.

Blocking the target cheget pages is near impossible due to the random completely random URLs (domain, arguments and filepath). The cookie thing is an issue for anyone using a cookie whitelist (too many trackers these days) but of course without cookies you can't track people off-site (which is what advertisers want).

As far as remaining anonymous while raising funds, you can always raise funds for something else. Nobody suspects kids selling lemonade on a street corner to use the money for buying beer and sigs.

The open source thing gave me an idea. You could try something like putting your swf thumbnailer on github and raise funds for maintaining that code. Perfectly legitimate, not a single funding site would cry foul. That swfchan happens to use that code, well... That's open source for you.

>Not sure whether that guy's complaint had anything to do with it.
They had been letting me use their site just fine for a year before that so it probably had everything to do with that guy. Patreon does this thing where they set their rules kinda loose and looks away until someone brings their attention to something. Then they may choose to forefit the money they make from that user in return for public opinion, pointing at a semi-relevant rule to back them up. I wouldn't really mind so much if they had just responded to my e-mails.

Matter resolved

I just noticed that EasyList has finally corrected their filter rules so now swfchan should be accessible like normal again! Since they still didn't email me about it when the change happened, and since I don't block ads on swfchan myself to be able to get some idea of what's being shown, it might have been a couple of days since they made the change. Maybe even a week or two as far as I know.

They changed "||eye.swfchan.com^" to "||eye.swfchan.com^$script", which made the filter only block script files loaded from the eye domain instead of blocking the whole domain. Easy peasy. No important scripts are loaded from there so no feature should break from this new filter.

Huge thanks to everybody that contacted them about this! Without your help this could have been a problem forever instead of for three months (give or take some days/weeks since I don't know exactly when this began or ended).

Edit: After looking around more closely their new filter broke 4 features across the site after all but it's been fixed by moving the necessary stuff from any eye subdomains to a folder on swfchan.com. If anything else comes across as broken I may have missed something and it's really just blocked by EasyList, then let me know and I'll look into it.

Unfortunately they still have this filter in effect:
||swfchan.org/*.html$popup,~third-party,domain=sw fchan.org

It prevents the html files that are embedding the swf files to open correctly in a new window (would open and then immediately close). It works if I make them open in the same window but they are still treated as a popup even if you manually open them in a new tab, which I believe most people browsing would want to do.

This is super simple for EasyList to fix but I won't even bother trying to contact them now, knowing how pointless such efforts are. However since this behaviour causes visitors to think that either the flashes are broken or the site itself (because who would expect their adblocker to block non-ads) I've decided to simply make clicking the filename prior to the extension open the flash file directly in a new window and if you click the .swf extension you get the same embed html page as before, just in the same window.

The old behaviour was reversed, except that the flash file itself and its embed page would both be opened in a new window when you clicked. A different workaround would be to change .html to .htm and keep is like it was before, I however don't have time for the additional work needed for that right now. I hope to do it in the future since the embed page do feature a seekbar, so I'd like it to be what's shown primarily when viewing a flash if possible. (I did try just putting ? or # after .html but EasyList ignores querystrings and anchors. Their filters are also case insensitive.)

Swapping back the links

Concerning what I wrote in >>53423, it seems that now you can open html files in a new tab again without them being blocked. EasyList still has the same filter as mentioned so either it was a different filter that was causing the problem or it was an old version of the adblocker plugin itself that did it. Regardless I'm glad to switch back to the way it used to be, however since I'm no longer sure what was the cause of the problem in the first place I can't be sure that it now works for all users.

Let me know if you can't open uploaded flashes by left-clicking the part of the filename that is before ".swf".
